This activity explores how natural textures can be captured and transformed into simple prints using everyday materials. It is designed as a short, accessible creative exercise that can be completed at home or outdoors, encouraging observation, experimentation, and mindful making.
The activity is also family-friendly and suitable for shared creative time, making it ideal for walks with friends, family, or children.
You will need:
Paper
Ink pad or watered down paint
Play-doh or soft clay
Natural materials (Leaves, bark, flowers, textured materials)
Step-by-step process:
Step 1: Collect textures
Gather natural materials or explore outdoor environments such as parks or gardens. This can be done individually or as a shared activity with others.
Step 2: Create a base
Flatten a small piece of play dough or clay into a smooth surface to act as your printing base.
Step 3: Press and imprint
Press natural materials into the surface to create textured impressions. Encourage experimentation with different shapes and surfaces.
Step 4: Apply ink
Lightly apply ink or paint to the raised surface using an ink pad or brush.
Step 5: Print
Place paper over the surface and apply even pressure. Carefully lift to reveal the final print.
What to do with your prints
Once created, your prints can be used in a variety of creative ways beyond the activity itself. This encourages continued engagement and shows how simple processes can become part of wider creative practice.
Use as background textures for sketchbook pages or journalling
Scan or photograph and develop digitally into patterns or graphics
Combine multiple prints to create layered compositions
Use as handmade decorative elements for cards or personal projects
