This activity encourages you to explore your surroundings through colour and observation. It is designed as a simple, screen-free creative exercise that helps you notice details you might usually overlook after work.
By focusing on colour, this walk becomes a form of visual collection and inspiration for future creative work.
You will need:
A phone or camera (optional)
10–20 minutes
Your surroundings (indoors or outdoors)
Step-by-step process:
Step 1: Choose a colour
Select one colour before you begin your walk (e.g. green, yellow, blue, pink). This will be your focus.
Step 2: Observe your environment
Go for a walk and look for your chosen colour in everyday surroundings - objects, nature, signage, clothing, textures.
Step 3: Collect visual moments
Take photos only if you want to, or simply mentally note what you see. Focus on small, subtle details rather than obvious objects.
Step 4: Reflect on your findings
After your walk, review what you noticed. Were there more variations of your colour than expected? Did anything surprise you?
What to do with your images/observations:
Use photos as inspiration for printmaking or collage
Create colour palettes for design work
Develop into Instagram posts
Combine multiple walks to build a visual archive
Translate findings into patterns or textures
Top tips:
Try different colours on different days
Focus on both natural and man-made objects
Don’t worry about taking “perfect” photos - snapshots are enough
Walk slowly and avoid distractions if possible
Repeat the walk in different locations for variety
